Field Epidemiology Training Programme
The emergence or the reemergence of infectious diseases, which we thought under control, and occurrence of major health crisis highlight the need for having adequate tools (surveillance, investigation, data analysis) for decision making and adequate interventions.
Field epidemiologiy expertise is a key component of an effective surveillance system, in Indian Ocean this expertise could be step up through a regional program.
The Indian ocean field epidemiology training program (FETP- OI) is strenghtening the SEGA network by building regional capacities and training of the key epidemiologists in charge of infectious diseases surveillance systems.
The trained field epidemiologists, after their two years of internship, will have the skills for assisting decision makers. On the long run they could be called to positions of responsability within their ministries and will ensure the long term sustainibility of the regional surveillance network.
The Indian ocean FETP is based on known programs such as the Epidemiology Intelligence Service (EIS) program of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the EPIET program (European Programs for Intervention Epidemiology Training) in the European Union.

The health intelligence unit of the Indian Ocean Commission organizes training workshops for public health professionals (public health and animal health), doctors, epidemiologists, veterinaries, biologists, vector control managers.
Since 2009, date of creation of the network, more than 50 training workshops were carried out in partnership with the regional institutes (CIRE Ocean Indien, ARS Ocean Indien, Pasteur Institute of Madagascar, PIROI….) for the benefit of more than 1,000 participants. - Outbreak investigation
- Geographical information systems
- Molecular bacteriology
- Monitoring insecticides resistance
- Laboratory quality assurance
- Transportation of the infectious substances (IATA)
